10/07/06 - Grand Ole Opry At Carnegie Hall (DVD)

By Tim Holland

It's such a thrill to be reviewing this new DVD because I was actually one of the audience members at this amazing night of music in New York City last year.

This celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Opry was held at the famous Carnegie Hall on November 14, 2005 - the night prior to New York City's hosting of the CMA Awards at Madison Square Garden.

The event was actually the first at the venue in over forty years by the Opry.

Hearing Vince Gill sing is always a pleasure. But I would say that Carnegie would probably have to be the ultimate venue to see him perform in. As well as performing If You Ever Have Forever In Mind, Vince teams up with Alison Krauss and Ricky Skaggs mid-show to perform Go Rest High On That Mountain. It's a special performance (the highlight for me) and one of just many throughout the DVD.

Martina McBride performs two tracks and Trace Adkins kicks off the night with Songs About Me. The night also features appearances by Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, Trisha Yearwood and legends such as Charley Pride, Bill Anderson and Little Jimmy Dickens. All perform material completely appropriate for the occasion.

If you appreciate a couple of hours of beautiful music mixed with sincere country flavour, go and buy this DVD. It's on sale from this week.
